“What is a Collection?” OSV. Oslo Collected Works part three, opened 26th September 2020.
On the 26th of September this autumn, osloBIENNALEN hosted the opening of OSV. Oslo Collected Works part 3 at Økern, a five minute walk from Økern metro station in Oslo. In the art project OSV., the artists Jan Freuchen, Sigurd Tenningen and Jonas Høgli Major explore art collections and phenomena that mark our public space. The project consists of a gradually evolving sculpture pavilion and a series of pamphlets available on-site. At the opening the audience got to experience the newly added elements, read the new publication and for the first time see and hear the artwork Tverrsum (2020).
In this third launch of the project, various types of ornamentation are common denominators. Among some of the newly produced elements that have been added to the project are the silk printed pennants – in the work WWW (2020) – that now surround the pavilion. Similar colourful and symbolic pennants have been printed on the pamphlet’s leporello (folded book) which is published as the third part of OSV.
The artwork Tverrsum, which can now be experienced in the pavilion at Økern, is a sculpture made of concrete and bronze, with an integrated sound recording developed in collaboration with the composer Jan Martin Smørdal. Smørdal has collected sounds from many places in Oslo. These are combined into a composition that will play continuously – from the time the artwork was officially presented to the public to the time when the pavilion is eventually dismantled.
Resembling a massive ear, the two meter tall sculpture is mounted on a plinth with a cast of Pietro Tacca’s wild boar Il Porcellino’s hind leg placed next to it. The sculpture will function as a “satellite dish” which will create a horizontal stream of sound through the pavilion.
For each edition of the exhibition in OSV. Sculpture Pavilion, the artists have prepared publications that are distributed on-site. The new publication, which tells about the new elements in the pavilion, is the fourth in OSV.’s pamphlet series and is available on-site and at osloBIENNALEN’s headquarters at Myntgata 2.
