Kraftbalanse (Composition for Piano, Alternating Current and Orchestra)

Øystein Wyller Odden’s new composition Kraftbalanse (for piano, alternating current and orchestra) was performed at Ultima 2019. It is a musical representation of changes in the power grid. [Completed by October 2019]

Information

The work consists of a self-resonating piano that has been tuned to vibrate according to the frequencies emitted by AC current. The piano is fitted with vibrating devices connected directly to the power grid.

In Kraftbalanse the piano is accompanied by a string octet which reacts to the fluctuations of the current in real time, based on a score developed in collaboration with Jan Martin Smørdal. The ensemble performing Kraftbalanse includes string duo Vilde&Inga and the piece alludes to both electricity’s utilitarian and magical qualities, and to its constant, underlying presence in everyday life.
